Bernadine's Stillman Inn- Galena, Illinois - Destination Review

Need someplace fabulous to spend your next anniversary, birthday, or just a place to get away for a few days?  Well, I have the perfect place for you!

My husband and I just celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary.  We'll actually be celebrating 11 total years together next month on September 7th.  Since we've been together so long, we've gone to so many places together, stayed at a lot of hotels, Inns and B&Bs.  This year, we wanted to go somewhere we've never been.  And actually, it ended up being someplace pretty close to home.  We decided to venture to Galena, Illinois!  Its beautiful, has so much history, so many fun things to do and its only about an hour and a half from our home.

We did some searching for the perfect place to stay.  Over the last several years, we've discovered that we enjoy staying at smaller places like Inns and bed and breakfasts much better than hotels.  We came across a website for Bernadine's Stillman Inn.

We were so impressed by their website and photos that we decided to give it a shot.  And we are so glad we did!

Bernadine's Stillman Inn is a luxurious, award winning bed and breakfast located just a short walk from the heart and center of Galena.  Their website and photos of the Inn do not do it justice!  It is far more beautiful in person than either of us expected!

The owners and Innkeepers, Dave and Bernadine, are fabulous!  We met Dave as soon as we walked through the door.  He met us with a welcoming handshake and invited us to have a seat at the dining table in their large, formal dining room.  We felt welcomed like old friends from the moment we entered the door.

The first thing Dave did, was present us with a map and all of his recommendations for activities, places to see, places to shop and eat and directions for how to get there.  We never once had to ask anyone else where to go.  He offered us coffee, a glass of wine or any other beverage we had in mind when we sat down.  They also had a platter of homemade treats on the table as well as endless fruit and cookies on the counter along with a fridge with wine and a microwave and popcorn that we were welcome to have and use any time during our stay.

And did I mention the ice cream?  Well, they happen to have a freezer on the first floor filled with ice and ice cream bars.  You can satisfy your sweet tooth anytime day or night!

The grounds are magnificent!  As you pull up to the mansion, you are greeted by a large beautiful brick walkway, illuminated water fountain, benches to sit and enjoy the sunshine and flowers everywhere.

The front porch is relaxing in the afternoon sunshine.  There is a bench to swing on and rocking chairs to sit and enjoy a good book and watch the birds while catching a nice summer breeze.

There is a great view of the front garden, fountain and surrounding scenery from the porch as well!

On the south side of the grounds you'll find another garden, fountain and patio area with beautiful seating to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or to sit and take in some fresh air and enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

One thing that Dave was so very adamant about, is that fact that he is always available if you need him.  In the front entryway, there is a comfy wing back chair and desk with a phone and Dave's cellphone number in case any guest needs anything.

Dave made sure we knew that we were welcome to call if we needed anything day or night.

Our room was gorgeous and so comfortable!  The whole house has a calming and relaxing atmosphere and so did our room.  The bed was so soft and we both slept great!  We actually lied down to watch a movie and fell asleep before it even started!

Bernadine's Stillman Inn also has a bookcase full of movies that guests are able to borrow and watch in their rooms during their stay!

The rooms all have private bathrooms with shower, toilet, sink and vanity and some of the rooms even have large jet tubs in the rooms!

The rooms have soft and very comfortable embroidered robes for guests to wear in their rooms.  My husband happened to notice that the bath towels in our bathroom were surprisingly thick, soft and fluffy.  He said to me, "I've never felt hotel towels this soft before."  Well honey, its a good thing we stayed at an Inn and not a hotel!

Our room had a hairdryer so I didn't have to pack mine.  Our room also had a coffee maker along with unlimited coffee and tea in the dining room downstairs that we were welcome to help ourselves to.

Our room had a comfortable chair and ottoman to relax in, a quaint little table and chairs and a flat screen TV and DVD player.

The architecture inside Bernadine's Stillmann Inn is just amazing, with its winding staircase, beautiful color scheme and antique decor.

Breakfast was absolutely delicious!  The guests met downstairs in the stunning dining room for breakfast.  Dave took our orders and served everyone a wonderful meal!

Our glasses never ran dry of water, orange juice and coffee.

We were served our choice of ham and cheese omelets or scrambled eggs, bacon or sausages, fresh cut fruit, homemade banana bread topped with sweet fruit filling,  choice of toast and yogurt.  It was such a tasty breakfast and everything was made fresh to order!  Neither of us were hungry again until dinner time!

There is also a lovely seating area in the dining room for guests to enjoy.

Bernadine's Stillman Inn is also home of the Galena Wedding Chapel and Reception Hall which resides in the mansion's restored carriage house.

My curiosity was killing me so Dave gave us the tour.  I think I have the perfect place in mind, in case my husband and I ever decide to have a vow renewal ceremony!  It was so beautiful and with such old time character.  It was small and cozy for an intimate ceremony of friends and family.

The reception hall features a beautiful hand crafted bar that Dave had custom built for the venue.  The vanities in the rooms were also built by Dave as well.

The Stillman Inn has had over 27,000 guests since Dave and Bernadine bought it about 13 years ago.  And they've put around $750,000 into renovating and restoring the Stillman Inn.  The wonderful thing about it, is the fact that they made so much effort to restore the Inn to an updated version of what The Stillman Inn would have been like back when it was first built.  They've given it a modern touch but kept the elegant feel of the 1800s intact for guests to enjoy.  We loved that about the Inn!

The view of Bernadine's Stillman Inn at night is breathtaking!  The glow of the porch lighting and the widow's watch was lovely and inviting.

Here is a little history of Dave and Bernadine.   Dave and Bernadine have been the owners of the Stillman Inn since May of 2000.  Before owning the Inn, Dave was a remodeling contractor in Gurnee, Illinois where he and Bernadine had lived with their family at the time.  They both had discussed their dream of running a bed and breakfast in Galena but had planned to wait another 10 years before pursuing this.  But to their fantastic luck, a good friend told them that the Stillman Inn was available for purchase.  It needed a lot of work but thanks to Dave's talents in remodeling and construction, they knew this would be the perfect place for them.  We were not fortunate enough to meet Bernadine during our stay, but hope to make her acquaintance during our next visit.  Dave is fantastic and did everything he could to make sure every guest felt right at home!

And for a little bit of history about the Stillman Inn, it was built in 1858 and only took 2 years to complete its construction.  The Stillman family originally came to Galena in the mid 1800s.  Because at that time, business in Galena was beginning to grow, Mr. Stillman opened an emporium on Main Street and was very successful. At that time, Galena was booming and was actually larger and more bustling than Chicago, and was home to around 15,000 people during the mid to late 1800s. The Stillman Inn has over 6,700 sq. ft. of functional living space with 3 innkeepers rooms, a basement, parlor, 7 guestrooms, 12 bathrooms and 11 fireplaces in all.

During the 25 years that the Stillman family was living in the mansion, they spent much of their time entertaining guests, some of which are rumored to have been President Grant's Generals and even President Grant himself.  A great site to see while in Galena is President Grant's house, which is about a 2 minute walk down the road from Bernadine's Stillman Inn.

Since the Stillman family resided in the mansion, it has functioned as a rental home for many families and tenants, an assisted living home, a banquet hall and inn and now the fabulous and luxurious Bernadine's Stillman Inn.  Dave and Bernadine have invested a great deal in the mansion, restoring and upgrading as much as they can.  They are always working on some sort on improvement on the property.

My husband and I both had a spectacular time during our stay at Bernadine's Stillman Inn and we'll definitely be returning for another visit.  We hear the Inn is beautiful during the holidays!

So, would I recommend Bernadine's Stillman Inn?
"Inn" a heartbeat!

Visit their website and check out their fantastic and very reasonable room rates and book your stay!  You can also connect with Bernadine's Stillman Inn on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, read their blog and follow them on YouTube!

You'll be glad you did!

Creative Comfort: Crafter's Comfort Gloves Review

Its seems like I've been doing more and more sewing and crafting since Emma was born. Whether I'm making diapers or wipes, clothes or toys, I'm always working on something.  And since I've find myself making such tiny baby sized items, I've noticed that its taking its toll on my hands.   Spending hours at the sewing machine or sewing things by hand has been making my hands ache and the joints in my fingers sore.

I used to work for a company that coordinated medical equipment and quite often I would get orders for gloves that would help ease the discomfort of arthritis, carpal tunnel and even promote circulation for healing and swelling reduction.  I always thought that would be something great to have at home because of how cramped my hands get when I sew.

Well it turns out, I was in luck!  Creative Comfort, a new line by Prym Consumer USA Inc., happens to make crafter's gloves.  Creative Comfort has a great line of crafter's gloves, supports and braces.

I was sent a pair of Creative Comfort Crafter's Comfort Gloves to try and I absolutely love them!  They are soft, comfortable and fit perfectly.  I guess I should say......fits like a glove!! And to top it all off, they were designed in the U.S. by an orthopedic surgeon!

Creative Comfort Crafter's Comfort Gloves are design to help sooth hand pain, swelling and even help with arthritis.  They're even great for keeping your hands warm in a cold house!  Of course, its August in Iowa right now so I definitely don't have to worry about cold hands at the moment but I cant wait to wear these this winter while I'm sewing and its below zero outside.  Our 103 year old house tends to get pretty chilly in the winter months.

Creative Comfort Gloves are also recognized by the Arthritis Foundation Ease-Of-Use Commendation!  If you're not familiar with the Arthritis Foundation Ease-Of-Use Commendation, it recognizes products that are easy to use and shown to improve life and make tasks easier for people who suffer from arthritis and other physically limiting conditions.  All products recognized by the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation are thoroughly tested by experts and by people with arthritis.

The gloves are made from 92% cotton and 8% spandex.  They are very soft, washable, breathable and provide mild compression for comfort, warmth, circulation and to help control swelling.  They have open finger tips to allow freedom to do everyday tasks and projects and for better grip.  They come in size small, medium and large.  In case you're unsure of the size, there happens to be a size chart on the side of the box.  Mine fit just perfectly!

They're also so easy to care for!  Just hand wash in cold water and air dry.  Simple and quick!  The price is really reasonable too.  You can purchase them in store or online from Joann Fabric and Craft Stores!

I would highly recommend a pair of these if you do any sort of sewing or crafting!  I dont think I'll be sewing without them from now on. These are just one of the many products we've come to love and count on from Prym Consumer USA Inc!

DrammyDroopers AI2 Cloth Diaper Review

So most of you know, I am a cloth diaper momma.  Before I became a mom, I only knew of one other momma in my circle of close friends that used cloth diapers for her babies.  Most of my other friends and mommy friends were really skeptical about my interest in cloth diapers.  And honestly, in the beginning, I was skeptical too!  There is so much to learn about cloth.  There are so many different kinds and ways to use them.   It was overwhelming at first.  But after some trial and error, we've been fortunate enough with a little help from friends, to be able to try some different types of diapers and have found many that work for Emma Bee.

When I was a pregnant and learning, soon to be momma of a cloth diapered baby, I didnt know where to start.  But one thing that seemed to be so popular amongst the cloth diapering forums and social networking discussions was the pocket diaper.   Its a super easy concept!  You have a diaper.  The diaper has a pocket.  You stick your insert in the pocket.  You put it on your baby.  When its soiled, the diaper and the insert go into the wash.   Super simple, quick and daddy friendly too!

There are so many cloth diaper companies out there.  Where do you possibly start?  Well....I have found myself in a recent love affair with Etsy!  There are so many fantastic mommas on Etsy who make cloth diapers.  And great ones too!  Thats how I found Drammy Droopers

 photo DrammyDroopersLogo_zps251e90b0.jpg

I stumbled upon Drammy Droopers' Etsy Shop and was browsing through their selection of cloth diapers, amongst other fabulous finds.  They also carry some amazing mama cloth!  Check out my review of the DrammyDroopers DrammyPads too!

DrammyDroopers has so many cool cloth diaper prints, its hard to pick just one favorite.  Actually I could easily build an entire stash consisting exclusively of Drammy Droopers diapers!

Drammy Droopers sent us one of their diapers to try.  I love it, Daddy loves it, Emma Bee loves it and Grandma got the giggles when she saw it.  The print is totally us!  Drammy Droopers sent us their One Size AI2 Pocket Diaper with snap closure in the "Playing In The Dirt" print.  The diaper has a suede cloth inner lining with a super soaker included.  They also sent us one of their super soft sherpa inserts to try out too!

Now, the first thing I noticed about the package was the love that went into it.  Our diaper arrived beautifully wrapped in purple tissue and ribbon with a card telling me everything I needed to know about prepping and caring for our new diaper and inserts!  No need to sit and wonder how much to prep and wash and what type of cycle to use because its all right there!

When I opened up our diaper, the very first thing I notice about the diaper, was the attention to detail!  One thing I have noticed with some other cloth diapers that come in prints. is the fact that the printed design on the back side of the diaper is right side up, but when its all sewn together, the front ends up to be upside down.  That's a bummer and kinda goofy looking in my opinion.  But DrammyDroopers actually uses 2 pieces of fabric for the outter shell of the diaper.  They make a seam in between the legs so when the diaper is on, all of the little critters on our Dirt diaper are all right side up.  DrammyDroopers is perfect for a picky momma like me!

One thing I found that I really liked about Drammy Droopers in general, is their selection of prints.  Theres only so many PUL prints out there but to give you a wider variety of diaper prints and colors to choose from, DrammyDroopers uses a layer of cotton fabric on top of a layer of PUL.  This way there are more prints to choose from and your diaper is PUL protected so it doesnt require a cover.

I've never tried a diaper with a suedecloth lining before.  Im glad I did!  It is super soft and doesnt get pilly fuzz balls like some diaper lining.  And the soaker insert is super soft and super absorbant.  You can fit it into the pocket and snap it in too!  We also were able to try their sherpa soaker.  I liked both soakers/inserts.  Bit the sherpa soaker is my favorite of the two that we tried!  Its made of 2 layers of microfiber and one layer of super soft and fluffy sherpa!  This is the softest soaker I have ever felt! And its absorbant too!  The soft sherpa side faces baby's delicate bum.

Emma Bee has been mesmerized by her new diaper!  Its adorable.  She loves to sit and look at all of the cute little critters on her diaper!  We sat outside in the garden to admire it.  It also has a great fit!  No leaks at all around her legs and fits great around her tummy.  There are snaps to snap down the rise and around the tummy to make the perfect fit!  The diapers and inserts are also made well and you get some pretty wonderful quality for a great price!

And just to give you a little history of DrammyDroopers, the name DrammyDroopers is a fun story and Heather from DrammyDroopers, was kind enough to share her story with me.  When her daughter was young, she and her Grammy were like "two peas in a pod" as Heather so perfectly put it.  She would always pronounce her Grammy's name as "Drammy." And most parents know from experience that when your baby has a full diaper, they tend to look a bit "droopy." So the name DrammyDroopers came to be.  Heather started making cloth diapers after a friend wanted some help coming up with a handmade diaper for her children.  Heather fell in love with making diapers and since Grammy is a fabric expert and the mastermind behind the DrammyBag, Heather got help from Grammy with all of her troubleshooting and fabric questions.  Her daughter comes up with the fun and creative names for all of the prints, her husband manages the Etsy shop and their team of fabulous personal assistants (Hunter, Shiloh and Emma, the family dogs) are the "break coordinators."  So as you can see, this is a whole family lending a hand in this amazing business which is so obviously in it for one reason, a passion for what they do!

I would definitely recommend DrammyDroopers diapers!  Heather is definitely my favorite WAHM and I encourage you to check out her fantastic shop!

You can purchase your own DrammyDroopers cloth diaper from her Etsy Shop and you can also (and I hope you do) LIKE DrammyDroopers on Facebook!

DrammyPads by DrammyDroopers Review

So I've been hearing a lot of women talking about mama cloth lately.  Mama cloth, in case you don't know, refers to cloth menstrual pads.  I've been doing a lot of reading on the concept out of curiosity.  And from what I'm hearing, there are a lot of women using them and a lot of women love them and swear by them!

Years ago I probably would have just brushed off the idea without hesitation.  But of course, as most of you who know me are aware that I am a serious cloth diaper mama.   Becoming a new mom and discovering cloth diapers at the same time was very exciting for me!  We had discovered a way to not only save money by not having to purchase hundreds upon hundreds of disposable diapers but we were also doing something good for our environment.

I mentioned to my own momma that I was interested in trying some mama cloth.  She scrunched her nose and the first thing out of her mouth was....."ew."   But I didn't let it phase me or sway my curiosity.  I had a feeling there must be something I'm missing.  There must be something that all of these mama cloth mamas know that I don't!

I've been scouring the internet for the perfect first pad, the one to base my whole opinion on.  The one that will make or break it for me.  Will I love them?  Or will I hate them?  I had to find the right one.  Then I stumbled upon an Etsy shop.  Not only did this Etsy shop make cloth pads, but they make cloth diapers too, among other fun things.  Perfect!  They had the best of both worlds for me. I had discovered DrammyDroopers!

 photo DrammyDroopersLogo_zps251e90b0.jpg

DrammyDroopers sent me my first set of cloth pads,
which are also known as their DrammyPads
 I was totally stoked!

DrammyDroopers says it perfectly on their Etsy shop listing for DrammyPads and I quote "if our babies can go eco-friendly with cloth, why cant we."  Well said DrammyDroopers and so true!  DrammyPads are handmade and great quality!  You can really see the care and love that goes into every DrammyDroopers product!

The prints are what hooked me to start.  They offer an assortment of bright and colorful patterns.  Then there's the fact that they fold up and snap to fit snug in a small pocket in my purse or in my diaper bag.

But before I get into the DrammyPad details, I want to tell you a little bit about DrammyDroopers.  I love supporting WAHMs (work at home moms for those who don't know the lingo).  And I love supporting family run businesses.  Well, DrammyDroopers is all of that and a bag of banana chips!  It is family operated and family oriented from start to finish.

The name DrammyDroopers is a fun story and Heather from DrammyDroopers, was kind enough to share her story with me.

So... on to the DrammyPads!  They are washable and reusable so you can use them over and over again!  How green is that?!  You're doing something green and good for the environment by not throwing masses of disposable pads into our landfills plus, imagine how much money you'll save each month by not having to purchase disposable pads.  I hate the idea of just throwing money in the trash, literally!

DrammyPads are constructed of a layer of super soft suedecloth, a layer of batting, 2 layers of flannel and one layer of fleece as a moisture barrier.  These are so incredibly soft and comfortable, there's just really nothing like it.  There's no chance you'll ever find a disposable pad that is as soft and cozy as these!  And they are not bulky either. So even though I am a cloth diaper addict, I don't have to look like I'm wearing one!

DrammyPads are designed for light to heavy flow so there is no need to go to the pharmacy and get a box of light pads and a box of heavy pads.  You've got everything you need all in one.  They have a special contoured shape for the prefect fit.

They are 9 inches long with wings on each side that snap around your panties to hold them in place.  And just to let you know from my personal experience,  they do not budge!  They stay in place.  I wore them on very active days and never had a problem with them moving or bunching.  And if you have ever used disposable pads then you probably know that icky feeling of a waded bunched up pad in your pants.  Gross!  No thank you!  Well not anymore for this gal!  I'm sticking with cloth for sure.  Another plus for me was that they did not leak and because of the many layers that make it so absorbent, they always felt dry when I was wearing them!

And did I mention that DrammyPads are super easy to wash?  I suppose you can wash them multiple ways.  You could hand wash them by themselves if you want.  Or you could rinse them and throw them in with your regular laundry or throw them in with your diapers.  I'm throwing them in with my diapers when I can and then line drying them.

So...would I recommend DrammyPads?  Of course!  They are so soft and comfortable, they stay in place and don't bunch up, they are absorbent and didn't leak for me, they felt dry, they are eco-friendly and they're going to save our family a lot of money!  I'll never go back to disposables! I'm a 100% cloth mama for sure from now on!
